A medical insurance policy, also called health insurance, covers medical expenses for illnesses or injuries. It reimburses your bills or pays the medical care provider directly on your behalf. Comprehensive medical insurance covers the cost of hospitalisation, daycare procedures, medical care at home (domiciliary hospitalisation), and ambulance charges, amongst others.
A health insurance plan helps you stay covered against various diseases. Additionally, it helps you boost tax savings. Under section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961, you can claim tax benefits against your health insurance premium.
Basic Health Insurance
You can purchase a basic health insurance policy to cover yourself, your spouse, your children and your parents. These policies typically cover medical expenses, including hospitalisation, daycare procedures, hospital room rent, etc. Under this plan, each member has their own sum insured amount. So, let’s say you’ve taken an individual plan for yourself, your spouse and your parents with a sum insured of INR 8 lakhs. Each of you can claim a maximum amount of 8 lakhs per policy year against your health insurance.
Top-Up Insurance
A top-up health policy is an additional coverage for people with an existing individual plan or a Mediclaim from the employer. It is for reimbursement of expenditure which arises out of a single illness beyond the limit of the existing cover.
Critical Illness plan Insurance
There are several lifestyle-related diseases that are on the rise. Health issues such as cancer, stroke, kidney failure and cardiac diseases can be very expensive to deal with and manage long-term. This is precisely why critical illness insurance policies have been created. They can either be purchased as a rider or add-on with your regular health insurance plan or separately as their own plan.
